Finishing My First Semester

Every day for the past two years my wife and I have answered a question in our “time capsule journal.” We just turn to today’s date and answer the same question individually before we go to bed. The first year was fun but the most interesting part now is reading what our responses were last year. For example, on November 30th of 2016 the question was “Today I couldn’t stop thinking about ______.” Blaire said “FOOD!” (Because at that time we were on an outreach deep in the mountains of southern Mexico.) I said, “What am I going to say about myself for my Gordon-Conwell application.” When we flipped to that page to answer our question on November 30th of this year we couldn’t believe how far God has taken us.

Now, only one year later, Blaire answered “Today I couldn’t stop thinking about how unreal it is that we are really living in Massachusetts!” When I thought back to my day to answer the question it was kind of funny to me. “I couldn’t stop thinking about my final papers for my first semester. And how in the world am I going to explain the Trinity in 8-10 pages?” Again, I am writing a paper, only this time Blaire and I are on the other side of our fully answered prayers. Let me tell you it’s a humbling place to be. I can’t really take credit for any of it. We have worked really hard this year. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever worked this hard in my life, but there is just no way we could earn all the blessings that God has lavished upon us. God has been faithful to provide a supporting family and community everywhere we go. Not to be cliché two months in a row but God’s undeserved love through Christ’s sacrifice is the gift of Christmas.

Favorite quotes right now…

“Yea, Lord, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be the glory giv’n;
Word of the Father,
Now in the flesh appearing,

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.”

  ―  John Francis Wade, O Come, All Ye Faithful

Conversation between two demons in “The Screwtape Letters.” “One must face the fact that all the talk about His love for men, and His service being perfect freedom, is not (as one would gladly believe) mere propaganda, but an appalling truth. He really does want to fill the universe with a lot of loathsome little replicas of Himself—creatures, whose life, on its miniature scale, will be qualitatively like His own, not because He has absorbed them but because their wills freely conform to His. We want cattle who can finally become food; He wants servants who can finally become sons.” .

10,730 Miles and Counting

We’ve gone 5,970 miles on the ground (that’s 109 hours in the car) and 4,760 miles in the air. We’ve stayed in 14 different housings in 7 different states (and 2 countries)… in just 52 days. Thank you every single person who lifts us up in prayer, support, and friendship! We couldn’t move without you.

Our time in Pennsylvania was filled with the best friends and family we could’ve ever asked for. We even got to celebrate our 1st year of marriage in a beautiful place away from home but home together!

   Montana was unbelievable! The TWO DAY van ride (one way) was… fun, but the amazing relationships and teachings were even better. It was an honor to help represent our base at the North American Hub of Biblical Studies.

Finally our trip to Bend, Oregon! What an amazing place to see both a friend’s family and a friend who feels like family.  If we learned anything from our near 11,000 miles on the road this summer it’s that relationship is the main point! It’s what God wants FROM us and it’s what he wants FOR us.

“You can’t go on explaining away forever: If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To ‘see through’ all things is the same as not to see.” – C.S. Lewis

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. – Romans 12:9-10

Chain Me Free

How would you define worship? Really, take a second… Would it be a song on Sunday morning or maybe, like me, you know it’s deeper than that but have never really searched it out. The bible says so many things about it and I’ve seen first-hand some of my favorite Christian leaders come to slightly different conclusions. I ask because over the last couple weeks we’ve been blessed with quite a few opportunities to lead worship. So we started to practice. Almost immediately we could feel a microscope on our motives. We wanted to do a good job but is worship a performance?

Leading Worship In Spanish

We were honored to lead worship at a ministry called the Ranch. A drug rehabilitation center for the struggling men of Tijuana. This was one of the most refreshing places to lead worship that we’ve ever seen. In broken Spanish we sang “Señor te exalto” (Lord I exalt you) and the prodigal sons sang as loud as they could. The stress of hitting the right chords melted as I could hardly hear the guitar. You knew they were singing to the awesome God that freed them. To sing in unity with those men was a gift and it reminded me that “streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.”

One of the men shared his story with us after the service. This was his 4th time returning home. His eyes were tired and his hands were worn. Why would he do it?! Why would he keep going back to the dark and distorted loneliness of the world? We prayed for him at the end of the night and he only wanted one thing: a fetter. He wanted a chain to bind his wandering heart to the Father.

The Ranch

“O to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart, Lord take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.”

So what is worship? Jesus tells us that true worshipers will worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Surrendering exactly who we are and placing Him above ourselves.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:1-2

“Travel light, live light, spread the light, be the light.” – Yogi Tea!

Year in Pictures 2013-2014

The past year has been monumental in so many ways. With all the exciting things that’ve been happening I thought I would display the past year in a river of pictures!
CSBS in class
This time last year I suited up to climb a mountain. I knowingly entered into a School of Biblical Study were reading each book at least 5 times was just the tip of the iceberg! What I didn’t know was that God had something a little extra planned…
Blaire and I
Going into the school one of my favorite bible verses was Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” His perfect will? I’ve always questioned if that even existed in such a fallen world let alone what it would look like. Until I met Blaire Noel Peviani.
We fell in love and ran in a 5k color run!... We didn't win.

I set out with Blaire and our friend Louisa to drive CROSS-COUNTRY!

The Staff
When we finally got to Mexico we joined the staff of YWAM (Youth with a Mission) San Diego/Baja! Can you find where I am?

The 2014 Class
Throughout the next nine months I’ll have the opportunity to teach God’s word and encourage others in their faith. We have 15 Students and 7 Staff who’ve dedicated the next 9 months to understanding the depths of who God is by studying His word!
